1% of the UK population suffers from diabetes. 3% to 4% over the age of 40 (higher in the Asian community in the UK). It is the main cause of blindness in the under 60s in the western world.
Following a routine eye examination your Eyesite Optometrist may conduct further tests to examine the eye in more detail due to potential adverse effects of diabetes.
Diabetes affects all the blood vessels of the body. The effect of excessive sugar in the blood causes the walls of the fine arteries in the eye (as well as other organs like the kidneys, heart, nerves) to weaken, similar to tiny holes in a hosepipe. Usually these holes will reseal and cause no problems, but if not the flow of blood to and in the organ is compromised.
